Nineteen-layer wood hoop

The hoop of the snare drum and tom-tom is usually made of metal, but there are wooden hoops as well. The wooden hoop shown in the picture is made using the same method used to make the shell, and has 19 single layers molded into a circle. It looks like a Baumkuchen cake. The wooden hoop has a softer grip on the drum than a metal hoop, and thus makes a fatter tone that will make you wonder if the shell magically became deeper. Rimshots also take on a deeper tone when the stick comes into contact with wood instead of metal.
