A 120-Year-Old Legacy — Project to Conserve Early Grand Piano for Future Generations

An early grand piano built around 120 years ago, during the dawn of Western musical instrument manufacturing in Japan, returned to public display at the Minato City Local History Museum in Tokyo on May 1, 2026. A Minato City Designated Cultural Property, the "Early Grand Piano Manufactured by Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd." had deteriorated significantly over the years. At the request of Minato City, Yamaha Corporation (Yamaha), the instrument's manufacturer, and Tokyo University of the Arts, a specialist in cultural property conservation, worked together on a two-year conservation project focused on how best to preserve the instrument for future generations. This article looks at the conservation work that led to the piano's return to public display.

Yamaha Music Japan launched a nationwide program in 2022 to meet the growing demand among schools for stronger and more enriching band club activities. The initiative dispatches qualified instructors to support students through “joint workshops”. In 2025, the program expanded to Fukushima, Okinawa, Iwate, and Hokkaido Prefectures, where Yamaha organized multi school workshops and live performances to further energize and elevate students’ musical experiences.

As one of our efforts to address such sustainability issues, we at Yamaha have redesigned the packaging for our entry-level wind instrument models. This project reflects not only our environmental commitment, but also our craftsmanship in design and manufacturing, carrying with it our desire to support every musician’s journey.

Preserving Music Culture for the Next Century: Yamaha’s Timber Due Diligence and Sustainable Sourcing

The stable procurement of excellent materials is essential to creating excellent musical instruments. Among these materials are the natural resource, trees. Growing trees to the size required for creating instruments takes over a century, and lately it is becoming more and more difficult to obtain timber of good quality. Not only is there the impact of climate change, but over-cutting and illegal trimming are also prevalent. The creation of a system for sustainably procuring timber is imperative for crafting musical instruments.
Placed in this difficult predicament, Yamaha is undertaking and promoting timber due diligence, which ensures that timber products have not been illegally obtained. We are proactively developing wide-ranging efforts for even better music cultures and the future of the natural environment.

Shaping an Unseen Future Through the Power of Sound: A New Challenge by Yamaha, Co-created with Global Innovators

In April 2025, Yamaha established a dedicated organization under the direct supervision of the president to drive open innovation. We will share the results of the business contest, which attracted more than 300 applications from 63 countries, introduce the four innovative winners, and highlight the thoughts of the project lead.
