The Structure of the Celesta
What kind of instrument is a celesta?

Beneath the keyboard of a celesta are two rows of metal sound bars, and above these are rows of hammers used to strike the bars. Beneath each sound bar is a wooden box. These are the instrument's resonator boxes.

The sound bars are split into an upper and lower row. In the Mustel Company model shown in the photo, the sound bars are arranged so that two tones with a semitone difference alternate between the two rows-i.e. C and C♯ are on the upper row, and D and D♯ are on the lower row.
