Pneumatic Player Piano/1913

[ Image ] Serial No. 3363

A pneumatic player piano. When a paper roll with holes punched in it at locations to indicate when notes should be played is attached, and the pedals pumped, the roll is wound while air is fed to the bellows. The keyboard mechanism operates due to the flow of air that occurs when the holes in the paper align with holes in the bar connected to the mechanism, causing the instrument to emit sound.
Later, Yamaha attached a motor to create a completely mechanized player piano. The player piano became a fixture everywhere from private homes to schools, churches, and stores.
