Research and Development Facilities

Yamaha boasts a trio of research and development facilities across the Shizuoka and Tokyo metropolitan areas, each uniquely contributing to the company’s innovative edge.

The Innovation Center, situated at Yamaha’s headquarters, is a melting pot of engineers with diverse expertise, dedicated to designing reliable and groundbreaking products. In Yokohama, the MINA Lab embodies a culture of curiosity, delving into research within the realms of musical performance and composition. Meanwhile, the Yamaha Sound Crossing Shibuya LOUNGE, nestled in the heart of Shibuya, operates as a dynamic nexus for cross-industry collaboration among artists and corporations.

Each center leverages its unique strengths, fostering synergy and driving the creation of novel ideas and values. Acknowledging the relentless pursuit of innovation, Yamaha regards these facilities as both crucial and irreplaceable in their quest for excellence.

Innovation Center

Opened in April 2018, the Innovation Center is a state-of-the-art facility where Yamaha has strategically co-located its technical departments and experimental facilities to enhance cross-departmental collaboration and streamline technological advancements. The center benefits from a vast reservoir of collective knowledge, amassed over many years across diverse departments, which fuels cross-functional innovation through the concerted efforts of engineers from a spectrum of specialized fields.

The Innovation Center is also home to some of Japan’s premier laboratories, enabling the creation of high-quality, high-precision technology. A key advantage of the center is its proximity to manufacturing sites like the Toyooka Plant, Tenryu Plant and Kakegawa Plant. This closeness allows for the swift development of prototypes, accelerating the process of turning innovative ideas into practical applications.

MINA Lab

Established in November 2024, the MINA Lab (Music Informatics and New Applications Laboratory) is a cutting-edge research facility situated within the Yokohama Symphostage, dedicated to propelling research in the domains of musical performance and creation. This lab draws together a team of specialists in informatics for musical instruments and music to spearhead innovative research initiatives.

Additionally, MINA Lab capitalizes on its strategic location by gathering the latest information and pursuing collaborative opportunities with universities and other companies. Through these alliances, the lab is actively exploring new frontiers for the future of music.

Shibuya Sound Crossing

In November 2024, Yamaha inaugurated a new outpost for research and development, the “Yamaha Sound Crossing Shibuya,” situated within the Shibuya Sakura Stage. Located in the heart of Shibuya, a hub of cutting-edge information and trends, this center aims to foster deeper connections with artists, creators, and companies from various sectors, furthering co-creative endeavors pertaining to new music and musical instruments.

The hub gathers a tapestry of research themes and developmental technologies from each R&D base, and facilitates discussions with individuals from a wide array of cultural, social, and technical backgrounds. Our aspiration is for this space to serve as a crucible for the creation of innovative value that will shape the future of sound and music.
