Yamaha Design “Synapses” SENSUS L / SENSUS D

Putters for women, created with a blend of design expertise and research into sensitivity.

Pride

Ingenious design decisions resulted in simple yet sophisticated head shapes that defy the norms for sporting goods and boost confidence for women golfers.

Professional

The plain shapes—a circular arc for the D-type putter, straight lines and right angles for the L-type putter—embody the design concept of a three-dimensional set square. They make the putters feel both compact and dependable.

Reconstruction

The putters evoke the image of using a set square to take a measurement. The shapes make it easy to see right angles to the ball, giving the golfer a sense of control.

Inspiring

We used design to give form to the insights gained through our research into sensitivity, leading to the creation of SENSUS putters, which encourage precision in putting strokes and boost confidence for women golfers.

Dependability you can see.

SENSUS putters for women have many novel features that depart from conventional putter design. The market for women’s putters in Japan has always been little more than men’s putters with shorter shafts; hardly anyone has ever designed putters for women from scratch. This project was notable for creating putters from a women's perspective, based on scientific analysis and consideration of sensitivity and movement. Our task was to settle on designs that golfers would trust implicitly, working from research into the ideal dimensional ratios and structural elements for the head.

After considering how we could make the putters feel good intuitively, we arrived at the concept of a three-dimensional set square to guide our design decisions. Our idea was that the golfer would approach their ball with the putter as if to measure it. Everyone has used a set-square before, so with that as the motif, we thought golfers would be able to sense the right angles for lining up putts and gain confidence in their approach. SENSUS putters are available in two models: the straight-lined L-type designed in the image of a set square, and the semicircular D-type fashioned after a protractor. The shape of each encourages the golfer to zero in on the outline of the ball and exclude everything else from consideration. The semicircular hole in the center of the head is designed to echo the outline of the ball and encourage square contact.

To make the putters feel like dependable guides for proper swings, we spared no effort in the details of each part of the sole to create heads designed to feel substantial and firm on the ground. The thin accent lines evoke the delicate nature of the contact between club and ball. The navy-blue coloring gives an impression of earnestness and decidedly feminine strength in suppleness.

SENSUS putters feature many clever design decisions that help golfers putt without feeling as though there is only one right way to swing. The top of the face contains only the bare minimum sight lines and dots.* The grip has a grid pattern and patterned center line that suggest—rather than require—the way to hold the putter, encouraging golfers to putt the way that they feel is most comfortable. Consistent throughout is our intent to create putters that deliver confidence and dependability to women golfers. They are lucky charms that encourage golfers to believe in themselves as they prepare to putt. We hope SENSUS putters will help women golfers discover the joy of putting their own way.

*Sight lines and dots are markings on the top of the face that indicate the orientation of the face and encourage proper alignment at address
