School Project—Passion for music education—
Contributing to the "Well-Being of People around the World"
through life skills for the future
Why is it necessary to learn music?
Yamaha launched the School Project to introduce music classes to public education in countries worldwide because we believe in the power of music.
Key to the project is that it aims to go beyond learning techniques and theory. Engaging with the joy of music nurtures skills for living in the future and can offer a life of well-being. This project aims to create those opportunities and develop the music environment and infrastructure in various countries.
We promote the development of opportunities and the environment through industry-government-academia collaboration so that children around the world can enjoy music activities. By achieving this, we aim to realize well-being around the world.
When society changes, education changes
The advancement of network technologies and communication tools, and the accompanying progress of globalization and rapid growth of artificial intelligence are completely changing the types of capabilities necessary to live in today’s society. In other words, the accomplishments required of education are also anticipated to significantly change.
What is it that Yamaha, which has believed in the power of music for more than 130 years, can accomplish in this greatly changing society? This School Project is one answer to this question.
Through music, we introduce the cultivation of human resources that is sought after in this age to school education. As a partner in this endeavor, Yamaha is striving to spread music education together with governments, teachers, and schools around the globe.
The power of music
Music has power to bring together diverse, unique individuals.
Rhythm
Sharing the experience of keeping the beat with others enables us to understand and engage more deeply with one another through music.
Songs
Expressing our own voice and listening to others—listening to one another produces a sense of security, and by facing ourselves we come into contact and resonate with even deeper parts of one another to connect with people and the world. Songs are also one of the best ways to actively communicate with others and learn how to live in your own way within a group.
Ensemble
An ensemble forms a rich world of music that cannot be created by one instrument or performer alone. The inherent characteristics of the various musical instruments, each with different timbres and roles, are fully utilized to craft a single harmony. Not only can each performer express themselves, but the delight of an ensemble lies in the harmonic cohesion born through listening to others’ sounds and sharing rhythm and melody.
Skills for living in the future
We believe through music, we can nurture “skills for living in the future” in a society of people with various attributes and characteristics, each with different talents and areas of expertise.
A variety of people coming together and contributing to the group through different roles to demonstrate the power of a team while communicating—today, these capabilities are called “Non-Cognitive Skills” (life skills) and competencies, and they are major advantages when it comes to learning other subjects.
The School Project provides high-quality music education to public education, which is a core institution of countries & regions, to help students acquire study skills, cooperativeness, sociality, self-confidence, and respect for others. It focuses on fostering the human resources who will lead the future.
The potential of music classes
Yamaha believes the music classes provided by the School Project should present opportunities through sound for the fellowship with others that is essential to growing as human beings. The goal is not to discover children who are talented, nor is it simply to learn music theory and cultivate musical skills.
We believe that the best music classes in school education should teach students “the joy of group learning.”
The goal is not simply to give a good performance, but to learn skills necessary as human beings and how to engage within a group. Instead of a place where only talented children thrive, by learning music all children equally gain life skills for the future in a fun and expressive way. That is the music education goal to which Yamaha aspires.
