High-end, closed-back headphones featuring a wooden housing reminiscent of a musical instrument.
A wood housing crafted from the same high-quality beech used in Yamaha grand pianos and unique Armodynamic™ drivers come together in the form of a high-end pair of closed-back headphones.
Designed with a tension inspired by the functional characteristics of musical instruments, as well as an appealing depth of color and contrasting reflections, the YH-C3000’s wood housing is a standout feature both acoustically and visually.
With this design we aimed to create a form that accentuates the quality of the beech wood and other materials used throughout. The glossy mirror finish—often seen in musical instruments—has been painstakingly hand-polished by skilled craftsmen.
We designed these headphones to be a lasting companion, with the hope that owners would develop a connection with them as a musician does their instrument.

More than a device: a lifelong companion.
With the YH-C3000, our goal was to develop a high-end pair of closed-back headphones worthy of Yamaha’s reputation as a manufacturer of musical instruments. At their core lie the Armodynamic™ drivers, the fruit of over a decade of development. As designers, my task was to create a form that both represents Yamaha’s unique technologies and evokes the company’s identity as a musical instrument brand.
Though my design concept was clear—to create a form that evokes Yamaha instruments—I wasn’t content with merely copying the form of existing instruments. Instead, I sought to take the construction and functional features that improve an instrument’s sound and integrate them into a pair of headphones. To accomplish that required a deep understanding of why instruments take on the shapes that they do, and to identify which elements would suit this product.
The YH-C3000’s standout features are its wooden housings, which are crafted from the same high-quality beech used for grand pianos. The natural tension of this highly workable material brings out the full potential of the YH-C3000’s Armodynamic™ drivers. In designing the housing, I purposefully imparted it with a certain tension, such as would be seen in a violin or acoustic guitar. The qualities of the instrument’s wooden body add complexity as it vibrates—a key element to achieving a rich, full-bodied sound. This resonance was an important consideration during the design process.
The exquisite beauty of the beech wood is highlighted by a glossy black mirror finish that faintly reveals the underlying natural wood grain. This finish is achieved through careful varnishing and polishing over multiple coats by master craftsmen, but it is the tension that serves to guide the flow of light across the surface, with contrasting contours of dark and light accentuating the superb workmanship.
Besides beech wood, the main body also uses metal, leather, and resin in its construction. Careful attention has been paid not only to the form, but also to the quality and color of these surfaces in order to bring out the uniqueness of each material. The inner mesh of the earpads features a burgundy hue which catches the eye every time the wearer puts them on, evoking the depth of a musical instrument and the joy of ownership with every use. The pleasing hue is striking against the black of the earpads, further accentuating the beauty of the black mirror finish.
The path to the finish line involved much trial and error, and my vision would not have been realized if not for the passion of the designers and craftsmen involved. Partway through development I had determined that the YH-C3000’s unique housing would have been too time-intensive and difficult to produce at volume for normal CNC machining, but just as I was about to start looking into other designs, an engineer proposed the idea of moving the mill on an elliptical axis, enabling us to produce at volume. The elegant, hand-polished sheen of each wooden housing produced is a testament to the skill and uncompromising quality of Yamaha’s Japan-based artisans and their work.
The YH-C3000 headphones are more than a tool to be used for listening: they were designed to be a trusted musical companion with as much character as an instrument. Amid today’s breakneck cycle of replacing devices, I hope owners enjoy keeping this special pair by their side for many years to come.
