Exhibition at "Japanese principles: design and resources"

Display of "Designed by Nature Clarinets KINTSUGI model" at JAPAN HOUSE SÃO PAULO

Overview

We will display a Yamaha prototype "Designed by Nature Clarinets KINTSUGI model" at the "Japanese principles: design and resources" exhibition held at JAPAN HOUSE SÃO PAULO.
Whether it be a bright, powerful tone, a gentle yet beautiful sound, or rich notes that leave a lasting impression, in the hands of musicians, instruments offer a rich sonic palette. Many of these instruments are created using precious wood from trees that have taken centuries to grow in a forest somewhere around the world. It is vital for Yamaha to confront the issue of trees and to face up to the fact that the wood that is so essential to these instruments is a limited resource, and to continue to think about a sustainable future.
Designed by Nature Clarinets are made using wood not utilized in production processes that demand uniformity, such as white sapwood, bark inclusion, and mottled wood. Since each of these have their own distinctive appearance, with no two pieces being alike, and moreover, they also have different densities and grains, the sound they produce is also different in each case.
The KINTSUGI model displayed here utilizes a technique called "Kintsugi"—which is used to repair cracks and flaws in pottery—applying it to wood in which the natural characteristics of the material are strongly apparent, resulting an attractive and unique musical instrument.
