Exhibition Concept
On February 1, 2020, Yamaha Corporation held an event at the Design Museum London featuring musical instruments themed around the concept of "Industrial Instruments," in collaboration with sound artist Yuri Suzuki, as part of his "Sound in Mind" exhibition which was on show at the museum.
"Industrial Instruments" are a collection of concept models for acoustic musical instruments, developed in cooperation with Yuri Suzuki. They were created as an attempt to reinterpret musical instruments in a modern context.
The three concept models appearing in this performance each comprise a mechanism to create sound and a resonating box to amplify it, with the mechanisms featuring a variety of familiar items from everyday life such as electrical switches, key locks, and comb tips. Each of these materials has a unique sound and we believe that using such sound sources may result in the creation of new music for the modern era.
In addition to the live music, this event will also host a talk session with Yuri Suzuki, displays of new acoustic instruments, and hints at the potential of the sound and music that may emerge from them.
