Giving Spaces New Meaning

#3 Bringing Hearts Together Through Space and Sound

May 29, 2024

Station Pianos bring music to train stations all over France, making them more enjoyable places to spend time. Meanwhile, Active Field Control (AFC) technology expands the horizons of musical expression by enabling creators to shape acoustic environments freely. Despite their different approaches, these two initiatives share a common "Key": changing space to bring music closer to people's hearts and to enrich communication.

Space as a Means to Connect People

"Music is the spice of life," says Eric Valenchon of Yamaha Music Europe, Branch France. "While not essential for survival, we need it because it makes life richer and more vibrant."

Station Pianos may not always spark big events or dramatic stories, but they do create small moments of wonder and insight in our day-to-day. "Accumulating these little joys matters," says Valenchon. "Putting pianos in familiar places like train stations gives us an opportunity to make a positive impact on people's everyday lives." Indeed, when the sound of the piano becomes part of your routine, it enriches your life, without you even realizing it.

Meanwhile, AFC offers audiences the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of music and performances. According to Hiromu Ohgi of the Spatial Audio Group, the appeal of AFC lies in "its ability to provide diverse acoustic experiences in a single location."

For instance, theaters with minimal resonance were traditionally deemed unfit for musical performances. However, by adjusting the ambiance with AFC Enhance and creating immersive three-dimensional effects with AFC Image, creators can offer experiences previously unattainable in such spaces. If a venue provided a unique acoustic impression every time you visited, it might inspire you to explore new types of content you had no interest in before.

AFC not only eliminates architectural constraints but also overcomes limitations on audience size. "Traditionally, classical music could only be performed for 2,000 people at a time, due to the limitations on the reach of the instruments' sounds," explains Ohgi. "However, with AFC, we can replicate the acoustic environment of a concert hall in an outdoor setting. This enables a much larger audience to share the experience." With AFC, any form of content can be enjoyed in any setting. Its ability to overcome the limitations of time and space means that content once restricted to a select few is now accessible to a much broader audience.

Sounds that Speak Beyond Words

While Valenchon and Ohgi are dedicated to fostering connections between people and space, as well as people and music, what drives them most is their desire to impact the relationship between people themselves. "The essence of music is communication," says Ohgi. "What's the point if sound is just traveling into an empty void? It's the existence of the listener that gives music its true value."

AFC embodies the spirit of TRUE SOUND, a philosophy at the heart of every Yamaha audio product. It strives to convey the artist's thoughts and emotions to the listener exactly as intended. By providing creators with tools to freely manipulate acoustic environments, AFC empowers them to express their sonic visions more accurately. "I firmly believe AFC can facilitate communication that transcends words or reason," says Ohgi.

AFC also enables the audience to immerse themselves in the music like never before. Ohgi recalls attending a performance featuring the technology. "The person next to me seemed restless and distracted until the performance began. But once the music started, he became completely absorbed in it. Looking around, I noticed that everyone in the audience was equally immersed." While it was the performers' artistic skills that captivated the audience, AFC undoubtedly played a role in drawing them into the creators' world.

Indeed, attendees of AFC-enhanced performances often comment on how it deepened their understanding of the composer's thoughts and emotions. Ohgi believes that this groundbreaking technology, capable of reshaping acoustic environments themselves, can facilitate communication to reach new heights.

Creating Unity Through Music

Station Pianos also inspire new forms of communication every day, enabling strangers to connect through music. Pianists sometimes play together, while others join in with different instruments, singing, or dancing. Listening to performances often nurtures a sense of unity among the audience as well. When someone plays a nostalgic song, a crowd gathers to share in the excitement.

Station Pianos can also build solidarity during difficult times. In 2015, Paris was struck by a series of terrorist attacks, leading to increased security measures throughout France. Valenchon vividly remembers the sadness and tension that gripped the country. He goes on to share, "One day, a soldier on break at a train station started playing the piano. The video of his spontaneous performance went viral on social media, bringing comfort to many troubled hearts."

The touching moment reminded Valenchon, along with many others in France, that moments with music bring peace. Whether it's in times of joy or of sadness, Station Pianos have consistently brought people together.

Spreading the Impact Across Every Corner of Life

Both Station Pianos and AFC have the ability to connect people in ways that go beyond verbal communication. Valenchon and Ohgi are exploring ways to expand their initiatives and leverage their impact across different contexts.

"We want to install pianos in diverse locations, reaching beyond train stations," says Valenchon. Already, Yamaha pianos can be found in places like shopping centers, office buildings, and airports across France.

The Groupe ADP, which manages Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, is particularly impressed with the effectiveness of the pianos and plans to increase their presence in their airports. "Just like in train stations, airports can feel busy and overwhelming. That's where the power of music comes into play," Valenchon explains. "We also aim to put pianos in places like hospitals and gas stations to make a positive impact on patients, medical staff, and drivers."

On the other hand, Ohgi is exploring the application of AFC beyond music. "I believe AFC can be used in various contexts, such as conference rooms, homes, and restaurants," he suggests. Sound plays a significant role in shaping our perception of a space. For example, a lively atmosphere enhances the experience in a casual bar, while a quieter environment is more appropriate for an upscale restaurant. "By tailoring the acoustic environment to the specific context, we could potentially facilitate smoother conversations and foster a greater sense of connection among people."

Keeping an open mind isn't always easy. There are moments when we shut our hearts even to those we love. In these moments, music heals us and gives us the strength to face the world again. Valenchon and Ohgi are deeply committed to enriching people's lives through their work because they understand the power that music holds.

What awaits in the future, if their initiatives continue to expand beyond train stations and music venues? Valenchon and Ohgi are sure of one thing: by harnessing the synergy of space and sound, they can spread positivity around the world.
