Sustainable Keyboard
The keys of a digital piano are normally made of plastic, but the "Sustainable Keyboard" is made of unutilized wood. In this experiment, we sought to create new textures and appearances for wood, in addition to making it sustainable.
Prototype
Two "new but nostalgic" designs were created on DIY and antique themes, both concepts long treasured as a part of daily life. (Left: DIY type Right: Antique type)
A digital piano made from wood?
We used four new technologies intended to make effective use of unused wood* to create four prototype digital pianos . This resulted in the use of less petroleum-derived plastic.
*Unused wood: Wood with knots and splits that can still be used in certain products.
The secret of the black keys
The keys of a digital piano are usually made from plastic, but in this instrument they have been made from grenadilla wood.
Different production methods were used for the black and white keys.
Black keys…Molded wood
White keys…High fill WPC (Wood Plastic Composite)
Crafting with boards made from scratch
The top panel used in the body of the "DIY" type is OSB (Oriented Strand Board, a material made by gluing together small, thin boards with a veneer of wood applied to one side) which is made by Yamaha, utilizing scraps of natural wood for luxury car interiors. We used flakes from a variety of different tree species, as well as different coloring methods, to evaluate patterns.
