Yamaha Casual Wind Instrument Trova

Hamamatsu, Japan ― Yamaha Corporation announces the release of the new casual wind instrument product Trova.

This casual wind instrument Trova*1 is a pre-trumpet for children to easily and confidently enjoy playing a brass instrument. Trova was created with the hope that children could experience the joy of playing a brass instrument. Yamaha has achieved the authentic tone of a trumpet by having a “branched-pipe structure”*2 with branched cylindrical tubing. Trova is lightweight yet exceptionally durable, allowing even small children to play comfortably. In addition, with no valves (piston system) used to make musical scales and therefore no need to learn fingerings, children can start playing right away.

“Trova is a product developed using branched-pipe technology, allowing even young children to easily and confidently experience playing a brass instrument,” said Jin Sakamoto, senior general manager of the B&O Division. “Trova is lightweight yet also strong, and children can produce sound by buzzing their lips just like with a brass instrument, letting them enjoy playing the notes of the natural harmonic series. We are confident that Trova will be a gateway to discovering how thrilling brass instruments can be.”

  • *1 The name “Trova” was coined by combining “tromba,” meaning trumpet in Italian, with “nova,” meaning new in Latin.
  • *2 The “branched-pipe structure” is designed with branched cylindrical tubing. This structure makes it possible to achieve the sound characteristics of a conical wind instrument while maintaining its cylindrical tubing.

Key Features

1. Authentic trumpet tone achieved through its branched-pipe structure

With its branched-pipe structure, Trova achieves the rich, expansive tone of a trumpet, even with a body of cylindrical tubing. Its two branched pipes make it possible to play the natural harmonic series of a trumpet. Furthermore, the cylindrical tubing allows the body to be wound for a compact size. The instrument’s center of gravity is close to the player when in playing position, making it easy for children to hold.

2. Lightweight and durable enough for even small children to comfortably enjoy

Its aluminum tubing dramatically reduces the overall weight. While a standard trumpet weighs about 1,100 grams, the Trova is remarkably light at 180 grams, making it perfect for young children. Also, the use of cylindrical tubing throughout the instrument allows thicker tube walls for extra durability. And while a standard trumpet’s wall thickness is about 0.5 millimeters, the Trova is thicker at about 1.0 millimeters for greater durability and strength.

3. Start Playing Right Away and Maintain with Ease

Trova is a lip-reed instrument producing sound by vibrating the lips against the mouthpiece, just like standard brass instruments. And as there are no valves, children can start playing right away without needing to learn fingerings. Trova is not as loud as a standard brass instrument, and the volume can be reduced even more by removing the bell. Additionally, its simple structure allows the interior to be washed out with water for easy maintenance.
