AI performance of the works of legendary pianist, Glenn Gould, at the Glenn Gould Tribute held at the Embassy of Canada to honor his remarkable achievements
- Livestream on Tuesday, October 4. -

Glenn Gould (September 25, 1932 – October 4, 1982) was a legendary Canadian pianist who abandoned his concert activities to focus on recordings, believing that the future of music lay in the power of recording media. While it has now been 40 years since Gould passed away at the age of 50, the praise for the recordings he has left behind only continues to grow.

2022 represents the 90th year since Gould was born and the 40th year since his passing. To honor his remarkable achievements, a tribute event will be held on the anniversary of his death on October 4 at the Oscar Peterson Theatre of the Embassy of Canada. (Sponsor: The Embassy of Canada)

At the event, in addition to performances and speeches by violinist Emiri Miyamoto, pianist Mari Kumamoto, and Gould researcher Junichi Miyazawa, there will also be a piano performance by the AI system we have developed in our "Dear Glenn" project. The AI system was created based on data from over 100 hours of Gould's performance recordings. During the event, the AI will play several pieces with his playing style, including tracks that have never been performed before.
The event aims to touch on Gould's innovativeness and foresight from multiple angles. It will also be streamed live to the entire world via YouTube free of charge.

Dear Glenn Project

"Dear Glenn" is a project launched by Yamaha to explore the future of music through the use of artificial intelligence.
Based on the theme of "an A.I. system crafted by love," it has been developed with the ability to perform pieces in the style of Glenn Gould, a master pianist who passed away in 1982. The project to develop this system has been dubbed “Dear Glenn” as a tribute to the artist’s attitude, which was the inspiration for the idea behind the project.

The AI system was first revealed and performed to a full house at the 2019 Ars Electronica Festival held in Linz, Austria, one of the world's largest art media events. It has also attracted much attention as a new technology expanding the potential of music, with Yamaha winning silver at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
