Giving form to the freedom to enjoy music, and standing out from the crowd.
The HA-L7A amplifier was created to allow people to enjoy the entertainment experience to the fullest. Users can change the sound field to match the content they are enjoying, from music to movies or live video. In this amplifier we sought to provide a new way for those who love headphones to enjoy content as they have never experienced it before. At the same time, we made it our goal to create an amplifier that would work with the YH-5000SE headphones, which had revived Yamaha’s unique Orthodynamic™ technology.
As with the flagship YH-5000SE, the HA-L7A features an intentional design in which the shape itself speaks to the user. We imagined that it would be something that people would want to keep beside them all the time, something that would let them “touch” their music rather than simply mounting in a rack like a conventional amplifier. This led to a concept somewhat like a building that towers over the surface on which it is placed. The two toroidal transformers on top of the body are an important element in providing high-quality sound, and although it would be more normal for them to be hidden out of sight inside the casing, we elected to situate these behind-the-scenes powerhouses on the exterior as a symbol of the high performance they offer. The end result is a design with an appearance that excites the user with the refined functionality apparent in its form.
In conjunction with our simple desire for users to enjoy sound, we were also mindful of detail. The exterior consists of two boxes aligned horizontally, each made of a combination of vertically joined extruded aluminum. The two boxes are joined together by a silver plate featuring an engraved logo. The louver-like lines encircling the product increase the surface area in contact with the air, for a greater cooling effect, and have been emphasized as a prominent design element. Instead of being arranged on the top or bottom section of the front panel, the connection jacks are arrayed in a single line, with the center of the jacks aligned with the center of the panel. Although the HA-L7A features a simple finish with only the minimum required design elements, the interior construction is more complex than it would appear, and the many challenges we overcame in perfecting it lend this bold, open design the feel of Brutalist architecture.
As with the YH-5000SE, sound engineers, designers, and engineers joined forces in a single team, exchanging opinions from the planning stages to expand the potential of the HA-L7A design. Looking back, I think that the interior layout of the components was the primary influence on its form, and the fact that we were able to create a design that allows users to freely enjoy sound is one of the most significant achievements of this product.
