Matthew Haislip 's Biography

Matthew Haislip is a hornist, teacher and composer currently residing in Starkville, Mississippi. He joined the faculty of Mississippi State University as Instructor of Horn in 2016. In this full-time position, he teaches applied horn lessons, music theory, ear training, chamber music and online courses in music appreciation. In addition to these duties, Matthew directs the horn choir, performs in the faculty brass and wind quintets, performs as Principal Horn of the Starkville/MSU Symphony and serves the International Horn Society as the Mississippi area representative. During the summer months, he is a horn instructor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan. Prior to teaching at Mississippi State, Matthew served on the faculties of Washburn University, Calvary University, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University.

Matthew is a founding member of Quintasonic Brass, and he has held the positions of Co-Principal Horn, Personnel Manager and hornist in the resident wind quintet of the Midland-Odessa Symphony; Fourth/Utility Horn of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra; Principal Horn of the Kansas City Civic Orchestra; and Assistant Principal/Utility Horn of the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. As a freelance hornist, he has performed with the Cincinnati Opera, Opera Naples (FL), Omaha Symphony Orchestra, South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, San Angelo Symphony Orchestra, North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Abilene Opera, Topeka Symphony Orchestra, Kinnor Philharmonic, Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MO), Saint Joseph Symphony Orchestra, North East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra, Big Spring Symphony, Lone Star Wind Orchestra and Queen City Brass Quintet, among others. He has recorded on the Albany Records, Mark Custom and Kansas City Jazz Orchestra labels.

Matthew regularly performs and gives clinics at universities and conferences across the United States. Recent appearances include the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music; University of Kentucky; University of Louisville; University of Tennessee, Knoxville; Tennessee Tech University; Morehead State University; 2018 Western Illinois University Brassfest; 2018 Southeast Horn Workshop at the University of Georgia; 2017 Music by Women Festival at the Mississippi University for Women; 2016 International Horn Symposium at Ithaca College; and the 2016 Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop. He has appeared as a soloist with the Mississippi State University Wind Ensemble, the Starkville-MSU Community Band, the Angelo State University Wind Ensemble and the Wills Point High School Band (TX). Matthew has published articles online and in print through the International Horn Society and he is a commissioned composer. His book of horn studies is published by BrownWood Publishing.

Matthew holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Horn Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the Master of Music degree in Horn Performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, and the Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Texas A&M University-Commerce. His primary horn teachers include Martin Hackleman, Randy Gardner, Michael Morrow, Elizabeth Freimuth, Thomas Sherwood and Duane Dugger.
