Jason Dovel's Biography

Jason Dovel enjoys a busy schedule as a soloist and clinician, having appeared at more than 70 universities and festivals in the United States and abroad, including performances at the São Paulo Trumpet Academy (Brazil), Australasian Trumpet Academy (Australia), International Brass Course of Thessaloniki (Greece), Historic Brass Society International Conference and International Trumpet Guild Conference.

Dovel has recorded three highly acclaimed solo CDs; Lost Trumpet Treasures (2014), Ascent: New Music for Trumpet (2016) and Baroque Music for Trumpet and Organ (2018).

As an orchestral trumpeter, he is principal trumpet of the Lexington Chamber Orchestra, Kentucky Bach Society and Lexington Theatre and spends summers playing in the Charlottesville Opera Orchestra in Virginia. He is a founding member of the nationally touring Quintasonic Brass, featured artists at the 2020 International Trumpet Guild Conference.

A dedicated pedagogue with a passion for research in teaching, he has published articles in the Music Educators JournalInternational Trumpet Guild JournalThe Instrumentalist, and the Journal of the Art College of Inner Mongolia University in China. He is also editor of The Big Book of Sight-Reading Duets for Trumpet, published by Mountain Peak Music.

Also active as a composer and arranger, Dovel’s works have been performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference, National Trumpet Competition, Midwest Trumpet Festival, Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference, Oklahoma Music Educators Association Conference and the Exploring Brass in Greece International Festival. His works are published through Prestissimo Press, Hickman Music Editions, Mountain Peak Music and the Baroque Trumpet Shop.

Dovel is Associate Professor of Trumpet at the University of Kentucky (UK), where he has taught since 2013. At UK, his responsibilities include applied trumpet lessons, trumpet literature, trumpet ensembles, Baroque trumpet and the faculty brass quintet. He has served as faculty sponsor of UK Education Abroad programs in Greece and Australia and is founding director of the UK Summer Trumpet Institute, UK Baroque Trumpet Symposium and the Certificate in Baroque Trumpet.

He has been elected to the Board of Directors for both the International Trumpet Guild and Historic Brass Society. He is also Artist/Faculty for the National Trumpet Competition, and he hosted the 2019 National Trumpet Competition at the University of Kentucky.

Dovel is grateful for the tutelage of many wonderful teachers, including Keith Johnson, George Novak, Charles Saenz, James Kluesner, Charlie Geyer, Barbara Butler, Barry Bauguess (Baroque trumpet) and Bruce Dickey (cornetto).
