James Houlik 's Biography

James Houlik has been critically acclaimed around the world as the preeminent saxophonist on his instrument. He has introduced the unexpected beauty of the tenor saxophone, wherever open ears seek a refreshing new voice.

He performs with many of the world's great orchestras, most often playing music that has been composed for him by such composers as Morton Gould, Robert Ward, Russell Peck, Eric Ewazen, and many more. His concerto recordings have helped to set a new standard for saxophone performance, prompting The London Daily Mail to recognize him as "The World's Great Saxophone Virtuoso." He has appeared in the major music capitals of the world as a concerto soloist, or in recital, including performances in Brazil, Netherlands, Germany, Taiwan, Beijing, Poland, South Africa, Turkey, and many more. With a combination of engaging repertoire and compelling artistry on an already popular instrument, Houlik serves up dependably exciting performances.

Houlik is Professor of Saxophone at Duquesne University, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and he is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
