Fay Roberts

Fay Roberts's Biography

Fay Roberts is an inspirational musician and teacher. She is one of the best Cuban charanga style flutists in the U.S.

Classically trained with a BA from the University of California Santa Barbara, Fay also studied in Cuba with famed charanga flute master Richard Egues. Richard gave her the music and encouragement to start a charanga ensemble in Los Angeles to help keep his music alive. This is how Orquesta Charangoa was created by Fay in 1997. Through correspondence, Richard was able to coach the band and provide new music, and the band has been actively performing and recording ever since its inception.

Fay is a Yamaha Performing Artist. In addition to her wooden Yamaha flute, she performs on alto and tenor saxophones, piano, Latin percussion instruments, piccolo and low flutes. Although she is classically trained and a master of Cuban-style flute, she actively performs Brazilian and jazz music as well.

Fay has been the Music Director at Braille Institute for over 30 years where she teaches, lectures, performs and organizes. She created and maintains the Braille Noontime Concert series and organizes on campus meet and greet events, talent shows and holiday shows. She also organizes the yearly Johnny Mercer Music Festival to celebrate the legendary lyricist.
