Dr. Douglas R. Overmier is Director of Instrumental Music at Bradenton Christian School in Bradenton, FL. He also teaches at Polk State College in Winter Haven, FL and serves as President of ArrO Music Publishing in Atlanta, GA. Previously, he served as Director of Bands at the College of Central Florida, Director of Bands and Percussive Studies at the University of West Georgia and Assistant Department Chair and Director of Bands at North Carolina State University. Overmier also taught in North Carolina and Ohio public schools, where his ensembles consistently earned superior ratings.
Overmier's ensembles have appeared at The Kennedy Center for two International Society of Music Education Biennial Conferences, the National Association for Music Education National Conference, twelve state music conferences and professional sporting events. They have been featured on regional television commercials, CBS Television movies and National Public Radio. Finally, Overmier's ensembles have performed during tours of Europe, Mexico, The Bahamas and Antigua.
As a performer, Overmier has appeared with renowned artists Wynton Marsalis, Alan Jackson, David Friedman, Mary Wilson, Steve Houghton, Dizzy Gillespie and David Samuels. His numerous performance credits include performances with the North Carolina Symphony, Triangle Opera Orchestra and West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Overmier is a published composer and arranger of over 300 band pieces and more than 100 jazz and percussion works. Many of these works can be heard on the O-zone Percussion albums La Bamba (Klavier Records) and I Said Jazz (Emerald Records). In addition, his music is featured in the CBS Television Movie Never Give Up: The Jimmy V Story.
Overmier has authored numerous articles in The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Instrumentalist magazines. His book, Approaches to Percussion Performance, has been adopted by numerous colleges and universities. He is a member of the College Music Society, College Band Directors National Association, Percussive Arts Society, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Kappa Psi, National Association for Music Education and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
