NEW! TJI Ellington Big Band
From MIM

Musical Instrument Museum (MIM)
4725 E Mayo Blvd
Phoenix, CA 85050

The Tucson Jazz Institute’s (TJI) award winning Ellington Big Band, honored with the “Best Community Big Band” award in 2012, is a group of young musicians and ambassadors of talent not only in Arizona, but also around the world. The TJI is a community music school with a multitude of programs to nurture growing musicians—one of these programs being “Big Bands.” Students are given the opportunity to play great arrangements and compositions, as well as hone their reading, jazz phrasing and improvisational skills. In this performance, the highly acclaimed Ellington Big Band, which is comprised of the highest level students, will be performing Wynton Marsalis’ “Tree of Freedom,” Pat Metheny’s “Minuano” and pieces from the Essentially Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich repertoire. This show also features an opening performance by the Highland High School Jazz Ensemble from Chandler, AZ. This uncut, unedited performance was originally broadcast LIVE from MIM as part of the MIM "I am AZ Music" series on January 14, 2014 in Phoenix, AZ.
