Todd Butler's Biography

Originally from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Todd Butler migrated to Baltimore to attend Towson University and study trumpet and jazz composition under the legendary Hank Levy (composer of "Whiplash" from the movie Whiplash). Todd launched into a career as a full-time musician and recording artist during his junior year of college while he earned Bachelor of Science in trumpet performance and Master of Music in jazz performance degrees from Towson University.

After Todd established himself as an active and versatile musician, he went on to perform and record as both a band leader and side-man with numerous artists and ensembles in many styles of music. In addition to his career as a professional trumpet player, Todd is also an established recording artist, contractor, composer, arranger, clinician, adjudicator, and educator.

Todd has been a faculty member of several schools as a trumpet instructor, ensemble director, and course lecturer specializing in music business, American popular music, jazz history, and music fundamentals.

As a trumpet instructor, Todd has helped thousands of students find fun and enjoyment in music while drastically improving their skills and learning about music of all different styles. Todd has developed a practical, straight-forward approach to teaching jazz improvisation that takes the anxiety and fear out of playing improvised solos.

Todd is very fortunate to have worked and shared with so many great students and directors over the years as a clinician and guest artist. Having performed hundreds of clinics and workshops with students of all ages, Todd has developed an approach and style that has enabled him to teach and motivate students while sharing the fun and enjoyment of music.
