David Dash

David Dash's Biography

David Dash is Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and a member of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. Prior to his UNCSA appointment, he served as Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Naples Philharmonic and was a member of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, where he performed as a soloist and toured much of the United States. David has also performed with the Atlanta, Baltimore, Charleston, Charlotte, Greensboro, Richmond, San Francisco and Winston Salem Symphonies; The Florida Orchestra; the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and the Sarasota Opera.

David is a member of the Dash Duo with trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden. They have performed as soloists with the Richmond Philharmonic, Naples Orchestra and Naples Concert Band and have performed recitals and masterclasses at UNCSA, UNC Pembroke, Lee University and the University of New Mexico. They commissioned James Stephenson's powerful "Awakenings" for two trumpets and organ in 2012. In addition to "The President's Own," David has performed as a soloist with the UNCSA Wind Ensemble, Naples Philharmonic, Naples Orchestra, Naples Concert Band, Bonita Springs Concert Band, Monmouth Symphony and the Astoria Symphony.

In addition to the Dash Duo, David performs with Mary Elizabeth Bowden in Watson Brass and the faculty brass quintet at UNCSA. He has given many recitals with Naples Philharmonic Brass Quintet and has performed with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Bay Street Brassworks and Echelon Brass Quintet. His recordings include Cold Mountain and The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs with the Santa Fe Opera (Pentatone), both of which received two Grammy nominations. He also recorded American Anthems with the Gramercy Brass Band (Koch International), Carmen Symphony and Other Classics (Naxos Records) and Symphonic Dances with "The President's Own," and with the Manhattan School of Music Opera Theater (Albany Records).

David received his Bachelor of Music from Rice University and his Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music. He attended the Orchestra Institute in Attergau, Austria, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the Juilliard School Pre College Division. His teachers include Armando Ghitalla, Robert Sullivan, Mark Niehaus and Tim White.
