Conveying Feelings Through Performing

A Conversation with Dr.Nattaporn Pakalong

We sat down with Nattaporn Pakalong to discuss her career so far and thoughts around music and education.

Some background on her music journey

The inspiration and driving force that shaped Dr. Nattaporn’s music career comes from her mother who has a strong passion for music, and that persistence has contributed and pushed her to become who she is today.

In her memories, Dr. Nattaporn remembers that her mother had always prioritized Electone practice over other activities and even schoolwork. Every Saturday, her mother would take her to the Yamaha Music School, although she would rather wake up a little late and watch television like other kids. “Mom didn’t focus much on academic studies, but she was very serious about my music lessons. When I entered high school, she had me take up the violin as a second instrument, and that turned out to bring me to where I am today.”

Her thoughts on music and education

From her first engagement in music training with a JMC class, she went on to study Art Education. During her study, she had already been teaching at music schools and giving private lessons at homes. After graduating, Dr. Nattaporn began working at Siam Music Yamaha Co., Ltd. “I’m really proud that my work revolves around music education since it has many benefits to children's development, be it physically, emotionally, socially, and mentally.” Especially during performance, the child learns to tamper nervousness and control the body. As Dr.Nattaporn often tells her students - “Every note has a meaning, don’t get too technical, but produce simple beautiful tunes.”

The ultimate goal in teaching is to cultivate the love for music and discipline within the students, equipping them with tools and confidence to practice and explore more music on their own. At the same time, it is essential to always look out for new teaching techniques and adjust the teaching style to match each student.

“For violin, physique may have an effect on musical tone, but gender doesn’t. Music is unbounded, it is for everyone.”
