Music teacher: A Bond That Lasts a Lifetime

A Conversation with Atibhorn Songsapat

We sat down with Atibhorn Songsapat to discuss her career so far and thoughts around music and education.

Some background on her music journey

Atibhorn started her musical journey with the Junior Music Course (JMC) at the age of 4 at the Yamaha Music School. When she comes home to practice with her mother, she recalls laughing whenever her mother’s pinky wiggled in a funny way. She went on to study music at undergraduate level while taking a teaching post at the Yamaha Music School, after graduation, she came to work at Siam Music Yamaha Co., Ltd. and had training on JMC courses.

Her thoughts on music and education

The most rewarding experience from being a music teacher is knowing that music enriches her students’ lives. “Seeing children being happy, having fun in lessons, or growing up and making big musical achievements such as getting into a music university, or even if they didn’t continue pursuing music as their main career, just seeing students incorporate the musical experience we had together in their daily lives made me very happy and proud.” She values the relationship with each student and feels happiest when she is able to guide and congratulate them through every step of their journey.

As a music teacher, Atibhorn emphasizes that joy is the core of music learning. If the children don’t enjoy the lesson, then they won’t be interested in learning. “Each child needs to be observed and cared for. It’s a fun moment both for the child and for me. Sometimes I’m surprised by the talents that they show.” Additionally, students are encouraged to listen to different kinds of music for inspiration, as what’s most important in playing music, apart from the enjoyment for the performer, is the ability to convey one’s feelings.

“Music has no boundaries. It doesn’t restrict race, religion, gender, age, or appearance; therefore, just be yourself and convey your feelings freely.”
