A Conversation with Arbhanuch Yuthavong

We sat down with Arbhanuch Yuthavong to discuss her career so far and thoughts around music and education.

Some background on her music journey

As a little girl, Arbhanuch’s mother often took her to the Junior Music Course (JMC) classes that she taught at Yamaha Music School, and she would listen to other students play until she fell asleep. At 4 years old, she then began taking the JMC course. Later, during her years at the university majoring in piano performance, she started assisting her mother at the school, and then became an instructor.

While she was studying, Arbhanuch took composing classes, and for a project, she chose to compose a piece of music for her grandmother who inspired her throughout her music journey. She discovered that composing is another way for her to communicate with people. “Even though I still feel nervous before each performance, the joy of sharing my music, lighting up the atmosphere always makes me feel good.”

Her thoughts on music and education

Teaching has taught her to manage different situations as well as meeting students with various characteristics. “Once, I taught a 13-year-old boy who disrespected me, so I warned him that those actions are inappropriate.” Teachers must be adaptive and adjust their teaching style according to the students' needs to ensure that the lessons are tailored and engaging. What Arbhanuch really focuses on is to make everyone enjoy the lesson and leave the room with a smile. “I feel happiest when witnessing my student’s progress. Each kid has their charm, when I teach them, I give them knowledge, and in return, they give me their fresh, positive energy.”

“There is no right or wrong approach to music. I want everyone to confidently express their creativity.”
