Yamaha developed so-called "glass skis" by applying FRP to skis, and began test sales in 1961.
Difficult to break and with better rigidity than their wooden counterparts, these glass skis soon found favor and four times as many were sold as wooden skis, with 700 pairs sold in 1962, 2,000 in 1963, and 8,000 in 1964. Yamaha-sponsored athletes won medals at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, proving the high performance of Yamaha equipment.
