General MIDI — a standardized hardware format added to the MIDI specification to create compatibility between Standard MIDI File software and MIDI hardware, regardless of the manufacturer. Any MIDI device displaying the General MIDI logo has a minimum 24 notes of polyphony, 16 multi-timbral (independent) parts, and 128 specific sounds.
