Controlling Volume on an EX5R using a Foot Controller

Because there is no Foot Controller jack on an EX5R, Foot Controller messages must be received via MIDI, from an external controller. A Foot Controller can control many functions, including Volume. When using a Foot Controller to control Volume on an EX5R, some edits to the Voice will be needed; a Foot Controller controls Volume by varying the 'Bias' of the Volume Level. The Volume Level of the Voice must be set to '0' in order to get the full range of Volume Control. '0' is effectively the 'bottom' of the range.

Furthermore, 'VL' Voices are treated differently than the others; they are optimized for 'Breath Controllers' like the Yamaha BC3A. These types of controllers use 'Pressure' (from blowing) together with 'Volume' to control Volume the way an acoustic wind instrument does. Because of this, when using a Foot Controller with a VL Voice, both 'VL Pressure' and 'VL Volume' must be controlled simultaneously.

Foot Controller Setup:

    1) Connect a Foot Controller to a MIDI controller capable of sending the Foot Controller data via MIDI.

    2) Connect a MIDI cable from the 'MIDI OUT' jack of the MIDI controller to the 'MIDI IN' jack of the EX5R.

    3) Set the desired MIDI Transmit Channel on the MIDI controller.
Controlling Volume of a non-VL Voice: 1) Press the [VOICE] button to enter Voice Mode.

    2) Select a non-VL Voice (indicated by 'Type=' at bottom of screen).

    3) Press the [EDIT] button.

    4) Press the [F7] 'CTRL' button.

    5) Press the [F8] 'SET' button.

    6) Cursor to 'Ctrl=' in the upper left area of the screen.

    7) Turn the (1) knob until 'set1' is selected.

NOTE: Each Voice can store sixteen unique 'Controller Sets'. Each Controller Set is capable of using its own Controller and Destination.

    8) Cursor to Elem '1' on the left side of the screen (Element 1).

    9) Turn the dial until 'on' is displayed in the screen.
10) If necessary, repeat steps 8 - 9 for Elements 2 - 4.

    11) Cursor to 'FC' in the screen.

    12) Turn the (4) knob to make the box next to 'FC' solid (screen displays 'on' in upper right corner). This selects the Foot Controller as the control source.

    13) Cursor to 'Dst:' at the bottom of the screen.

    14) Turn the (1) knob until '001: COM Volume' is selected for the 'Destination'.

    15) Turn the (6) knob to set the 'Depth' (amount) of control (Ex. +63).

    18) Cursor to 'Volume' in the lower left area of the screen.

    19) Turn the (2) knob until the Bottom Volume Level is set to '0'.
Tip: Increasing the number will result in the Volume not going completely down when the Foot Controller is pulled back.

    20) Press the [EXIT] button.
Controlling Volume of a VL Voice: 1) Press the [VOICE] button to enter Voice Mode.
