Saving and Playing a Song Using a SmartMedia Card

Sequenced songs in 'Standard MIDI File format 0' can be saved and played on an S90 by using a SmartMedia Card. The card must be a 3V type (3.3 Volts) and can be found with memory in a wide rage of sizes.

The 'File Utility' application, which comes on the 'Tools' CD-ROM (included with the S90) is needed to transmit the Standard MIDI Files to the SmartMedia Card. 'File Utility' can be used on a PC running Windows or a Macintosh computer.
Preliminary Setup:
  1. Save a sequenced Song in Standard MIDI File 'format 0' to a drive on the computer (i.e. the hard drive).
NOTE: If the Standard MIDI File being used is 'format 1', it must be converted to 'format 0' using 'File Utility', in order to work on a SmartMedia Card.
  2. Connect the computer and the S90 together. Click here for 'Connecting an S90 with a computer'.
  3. Install the 'File Utility' application on the computer. See the ‘Tools for S90’ Installation Guide for instructions on installing and setting up the 'File Utility' application.
  4. If the Song requires a 'General MIDI' sound source, the Yamaha PLG150XG Plug-in Board will need to be installed. Aditionally, the original Voice Parts will need to be muted, to avoid conflicting with the Voices on the Plug-in Board. Click here for 'Muting and resetting a PLG150XG Plug-in Board in an S90'.
  5. Format a SmartMedia Card in the S90, and leave the card in the slot. Click here for 'Formatting a SmartMedia Card on an S90'.
Saving a Song to a SmartMedia Card:
  1. Open the 'File Utility' application.
  2. Open the window (folder) that contains the file to be transmitted.
NOTE: Double-click the Computer icon at the left corner of the toolbar to open the directory specified in the File Utility Setup dialog. To make data organization chores easier, create a special File Utility folder and save all File Utility files there.
NOTE:If a Macintosh computer is being used, double-click the volume or folder in the Main window to open the sub-window.
  3. Select a file to be transmitted from the window opened in step 1.
  4. Drag a file and drop it to the desired location (directory) in the Main window in the File Utility. It can be dropped directly to the volume (media) icon.
NOTE: Data transfer from the computer to the media handled by the MIDI instrument begins immediately (as long as there is no problem in reading the file and recognizing the destination directory).
