Digital noise when connecting a DAT to 02R digital input 2TRD1 or 2TRD2
The 02R and the DAT are each synchronized, or ''locked'', to different word clock references. For proper, noise-free operation, they need to be locked to the same clock reference. Typically, one of the units (either the DAT or the 02R) will provide the clock reference, serving as ''word clock master''. Then the other unit is locked to that reference, acting as ''word clock slave''.
Since most DAT machines operate only in ''Clock Master'' mode during playback, they cannot be ''slaved'' to other clock sources when playing back. So, in this situation, the DAT must serve as the word clock master. The 02R, then, must be set as a word clock slave. To do this, the 02R is set to lock to the DAT clock coming in the 2TRD1 or 2TRD2 input, where the DAT is connected.

Connect the DAT to one of the 2-track digital inputs of the 02R. If the output of the DAT is in the AES/EBU format (using a 3-terminal XLR-type connector), connect it to input 2TRD1, the 02R's AES/EBU input. If the output of the DAT is in the S/PDIF format (using an RCA-type ''phono'' connector), connect it to 2TRD2, the 02R's S/PDIF input.
Turn the DAT recorder on.
Press the [DIGITAL I/O] button repeatedly until Page 1/5 ''Word Clock Select'' is visible. Use the cursor buttons to highlight the 2TRK input that the DAT is connected to. Press [ENTER]. The selected box should have a dark background and light text. The bottom left corner should display the source clock frequency (48kHz or 44.1kHz).
Press the [DIGITAL I/O] button for Page 2/5 ''Input Signal Select''. Use the cursor buttons to highlight the ''2TR-IN D1'' box if the DAT is connected to input 2TRD1, or the ''2TR-IN D2'' box if the DAT is connected to input 2TRD2. Press [ENTER]. The selected box should have a dark background and light text.
If the DAT is connected to input 2TRD1, the DAT signal will appear in inputs 17 and 18 of the 02R. If the DAT is connected to input 2TRD2, the DAT signal will appear in inputs 19 and 20.
NOTE: Once this system is configured, inputs 2TRD1 or 2TRD2 may also be routed to the Control Room Output. Simply go to the Control Room panel and select the input that is receiving the DAT signal (2TRD1 or 2TRD2).
