Pattern Recording using Preset Drum Loops for Backing
The Preset drum loops (all 128 of them) can be used to initiate bouts of free-flowing, pattern-based recording. It's quick, creative, and simple... once you know how.In the interest of directness, this guide uses the default settings of 4 bar loop recording, at 120 BPM. Cursor over to where it says '120' on the main Pattern screen and use the dial to increase or decrease tempo if necessary.
- 1) Press the [PATTERN] button. Find an empty Pattern location. Make sure the [TRACK SELECT] button is ON, then press the [1] button in the same row so that both lights are ON.
2) Press the [F4] button to select 'PATCH' and use the cursor buttons and/or the (DATA) dial to select 'pre' (Preset Phrase, which is how the preset drum patterns are stored). Move the cursor to the right to select the Preset Phrase numbers, and scroll through the numbers to call up the different Patterns. The name of each selected pattern: Flip Hop, Gangsta etc. is displayed at the top of the screen.
3) Press the [PLAY] button.
4) When you find a Pattern that you like, press the [2] button in the 'Track Select' row, then press the [MIXING] button, and then press the [CATEGORY SEARCH]button. As the beat you selected continues to play, you can now trawl the entire MOTIF library of voices for a sound on which to play a bassline, vamp, melody... i.e. whatever you want to do next.
5) Press the [STOP] button. Press the [RECORD] button and play your part over the drumbeat.
- 6) Press the [STOP] button to finish recording.
7) To record a third part, press the [3] button in Track Select row, the [MIXING] button, and then the [CATEGORY SEARCH] button. Select a sound for your third Track. When you find one, press the [STOP] button. Then go into record... If you play something that you want to discard, press and hold the [F6] 'ERASE' button while holding down the notes to be removed on the keyboard during recording.
