Obtaining Compatible MIDI Files for a Yamaha MIDI Instrument

Most Yamaha MIDI instruments have a set of logos on the panel. These logos indicate what types of MIDI files are compatible with the instrument.

Below is a list of logos and the MIDI file types associated with them:

Yamaha Logos
Logo Description
General MIDI Logo General MIDI (GM) was the first industry-accepted MIDI specification. Instruments with this logo are compatible with Standard MIDI Files (SMF) that use GM commands. Link to the XG MIDI Library
XG Logo Extended General MIDI (XG), developed by Yamaha, is a MIDI specification that expands upon General MIDI. Instruments with this logo are compatible with standard MIDI files that use XG as well as GM commands. Link to the XG MIDI Library
Disk Orchestra Logo Disk Orchestra Collection (DOC) is a Yamaha proprietary MIDI specification. (It is also a descriptive title of a MusicSoft Collection) Instruments with this logo are usually compatible with a wide range of MusicSoft brands such as:

Clavisoft
Pianosoft
CueTime
Style File Logo Yamaha Style File is a Yamaha proprietary MIDI specification for auto accompaniment sequences. Instruments with this logo are compatible with an extensive Style File Library. Link to the Style File Library
XF Logo XF is a Yamaha proprietary expansion of the MIDI specification. XF commands are embedded into some Standard MIDI Files. An instrument with this logo will display lyrics and chords on the screen as the MIDI file with XF is played. Link to the XG MIDI Library
Vocal Harmony Logo VH is a Yamaha proprietary expansion of the MIDI specification. VH commands are embedded into some Standard MIDI Files. VH commands will activate an on-board Vocal Harmonizer as a MIDI file is played. Link to the XG MIDI Library
