MIDI 101- Explanation of Local Control
NOTE: In order to experience all the features of this online document, the Macromedia Flash plugin and a PC sound system are required.
The Local Control setting determines if the keys control the internal sounds of the instrument. When the Local Control setting is ON, the keys control the internal sounds and send MIDI messages via the MIDI OUT port. When the Local Control setting is OFF, the keys send MIDI messages via the MIDI OUT port only. The internal sounds will not be triggered by the keys. The Local Control setting can be illustrated in the following applications: Controlling an External Tone Generator In this application, the Local Control setting will determine if the keys control the internal and external tone generators or just the external tone generator. In Figure 1, when Local Control is ON, the player chooses the option to layer or combine the internal and external sound outputs. In Figure 2, when Local Control is OFF, the player chooses to play sounds from an external tone generator and mute the internal sounds of the instrument. |

Macromedia Flash Audio Disclaimer: The Flash audio playback quality will vary from system to system. Connecting to a Computer In this application, the Local Control setting will determine the route of the MIDI data. In both examples, the MIDI data is routed to the internal tone generator of the keyboard. In Figure 3, when Local Control is ON, the player selects and plays the internal sounds of the keyboard directly by pressing buttons on the panel of the keyboard and playing the keys of the keyboard. The MIDI application receives the MIDI messages from the keyboard and processes them accordingly. The 'ECHO' function, a parameter setting in most MIDI applications, should be OFF in order to avoid a MIDI feedback loop. This configuration is most common when using a MIDI Music Education application such as Discovering Keyboards. In Figure 4, when Local Control is OFF, the player selects and plays the internal sounds of the keyboard through the computer and the MIDI application. The player uses the MIDI application to select the internal sound of the keyboard and then plays those sounds by playing the keys of the keyboard. The MIDI application receives the MIDI messages from the keyboard and processes them accordingly. The 'ECHO' function, a parameter setting in most MIDI applications, should be ON in order to complete the routing of the MIDI messages. This configuration is most common when using a MIDI Music Sequencing application such as Cakewalk. |
