All State Piano Ensemble Stars at Kentucky Music Teachers Association

The 1999 Kentucky Music Teachers Convention, held October 30 through November 2, 1999 at Campbellsville University, was highlighted by the 25th All-State Piano Ensemble Concert, an all-star concert featuring 90 students and teachers performing on 18 Clavinova digital pianos. The educators and students played 15 CVP90 series models and three CLP series models, which were provided Brian Henderson of Henderson Music of Covington and Lexington, KY.

The student pianists were divided into five age/performance level groups, with each group performing three selections. The All-State music was sent to students in late spring and qualifying auditions were held prior to the convention. Audition winners then began rehearsals under the direction of guest conductor Susan Ogilvy.

The 18 Clavinovas were center stage as the musicians performed a wide range of musical styles. Orchestral pieces, jazz combos, and Latin arrangements exposed the players to a diversity of styles that were enhanced by the vast array of sound choices offered by the Clavinova.

The concert featured the combined talents of Kentucky teachers on the Clavinova digital pianos as they accompanied the 35-voice Campbellsville University Chorale in a performance of “Searching the Stars,” written by Susan Ogilvy. According to Ms. Ogilvy, “The performance demonstrated many of the eclectic XG sounds of the Clavinova in a contemporary setting, amplifying the song’s themes of space, the planets and exploration of the unknown.”

The KMTA All-State Piano Ensemble has been invited to perform in February, 2000 at the Kentucky Music Educators Convention in Louisville, KY, where they will illustrate to hundreds of school music educators the many benefits of the Clavinova CVP digital piano in an ensemble setting.
