Scientific Studies Establish that Keyboard Training Improves the Health of Seniors

t’s long been thought that music can soothe the soul, and that playing music can be beneficial to one’s mental and physical health. Now, scientific research confirms these long held beliefs — playing music, specifically the keyboard, has been shown to improve the well-being of the elderly. The research team, headed by Dr. Frederick Tims, Ph.D., MT-BC, Chair of Music Therapy at Michigan State University, found that group keyboard lessons given to older Americans significantly improved anxiety, depression and loneliness — three factors that

are critical in coping with stress, stimulating the immune system, and improving overall health. The results of the study were presented in Miami last April.

Called the Music Making and Wellness Project, the study was a joint effort of five universities — Michigan State, the University of Miami, the University of South Florida, the University of Kansas, and Sweden’s Karlinska Medical Institute —in cooperation with the American Music Therapy Association and Florida-based Fletcher Music Centers. The project was made possible through the combined efforts and resources of various organizations. Music retailers and manufacturers, including Yamaha Corporation of America, and the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences provided initial funding. Additional funding was provided by NAMM (International Music Products Association®). Yamaha representatives from the Emerging Markets Group remain actively involved in the planning and informational meetings with the scientific staff.
