Jim Lynch, Father of Clavinova, Retires

fter more than three decades in the musical industry and 20 years with Yamaha, Assistant General Manager Jim Lynch retired from the Piano Division at the end of March.

Jim made many noteworthy contributions during his
successful career at Yamaha. He will be especially remembered for his pioneering role in launching the award-winning Clavinova® line in 1983. Jim directed Clavinova marketing efforts in the U.S. and was deeply involved in product development throughout, maintaining the Clavinova as the dominant product in its category.

The Clavinova digital piano wasn’t just a new product when it appeared—it was a new category, one which Yamaha invented and Jim ushered into market domination. It required a new kind of marketing approach to a new kind
of customer—who wasn’t necessarily trained in traditional piano play but wanted the fun and entertainment of a piano in the home. By 1990, sales of electronic keyboards had practically matched sales of traditional acoustic pianos, a development traceable in no small part to Lynch’s work.

“It’s pretty much been my baby to some degree from the day
it arrived,” Jim says. “It’s been profitable ever since, and a rewarding experience for me.”

Jim says he will miss his contact with piano dealers around the country. “We in the Piano Division try to develop relationships with our dealers,” he explains. “They’re not just people we sell to. We know them, travel with them, go out to see them.”

Jim began his Yamaha career as a District Manager serving Arizona and Southern California. His dry wit and wise judgment will be missed in the Yamaha Piano Division. Best wishes to Jim and his wife, Lori, who make their home in San Dimas, California.
