Kentucky Clavinova
Players ‘Take the S Train’

Last November, more than 115 music teachers and piano students converged upon Northern Kentucky University in Covington for the Kentucky Music Teachers Association (KMTA) state convention. Three Yamaha specialists – Joy Carden, Susan Ogilvy, and Sue Downs – helped make the event, which featured an array of hands-on workshops as well as performances by the All-State Piano Ensemble, a rousing success. The convention was especially gratifying since it attracted a widely mixed age group.

“It was more than just a teachers’ event,” Downs comments. “I was surprised to see so many younger children and their parents.”

Ogilvy conducted the All-State Ensemble for an eclectic concert of classical, pop, ethnic, contemporary, and jazz tunes, then transformed it into a “Big Band” to accompany Downs in a premier of Take The S Train, a piece adapted especially for Downs by Ogilvy’s husband, Jim. The 18 Clavinova CVP105 and CVP107 digital pianos, provided by Henderson Music in Covington, became the bass, percussion, trumpets, trombones, and stringed instruments in a performance that was truly the highlight of the convention.
