Organ Enthusiasts Gather For Annual Keyboard Festival

Yamaha Specialists Sue Downs and Dan Rodowicz perform a duo on a Clavinova CVP109 and the Electone AR100 at the 1999 Home Organ and Keyboard Festival

Organ music lovers worldwide came together last September to share the magic of music at the 40th annual Home Organ & Keyboard Festival held at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Conference Center in Monterey, CA. Recognized by many “Festivaleers” as the greatest organ show on earth, this organ-enthusiast event is known internationally, bringing attendees and artists from around the globe. However, many belong to the San Francisco Bay Area’s 1,000-member Pacific Council for Organ Clubs. For the last 15 years Music Exchange in Walnut Creek, CA has provided the Yamaha Clavinova CVP digital pianos and Yamaha Electone organs featured at this Festival.

The Home Organ & Keyboard Festival features organ and keyboard artists from around the world performing in workshops, jam sessions, and concerts throughout the four-day event. Festivaleers are challenged with personal learning adventures in master classes and workshops that teach professional techniques and insights. The world’s leading manufacturers of organs introduce their latest technology and instruments at the Festival, answering questions and presenting full-scale demonstrations and workshops on their instruments. Yamaha Keyboard Specialists Sue Downs and Dan Rodowicz, along with Music Exchange’s Gus Pearson and Stan Koyama, participated in help sessions in the Yamaha showroom, while highlighting the features of the new instruments. They also presented special demonstrations on arrangement and orchestration using Yamaha’s new and emerging technologies.

Festival mornings are dedicated to educational sessions taught by world-class organ instructors; these sessions provide credit for continuing education classes for many Festivaleers. The afternoons are generally open showroom times for the manufacturers. Representatives from each manufacturer present mini-concerts for Festivaleers and demonstrate the features of their company’s products. Festival evenings are filled with fully staged concerts with professional lighting and sound systems. Following the concerts are varying after-hours events, usually taking place in the manufacturers’ showrooms.

Home Organ & Keyboard Festival Co-Director Kelley Conrad says, “The Home Organ Festival is one of the highlights of the year for organ aficionados.”
