Series at the Indian Prairie Public Library in November 1996.

Student's Legacy Lives On in Music

Patrons of the Indian Prairie Public Library in Darien, IL can now do more than checkout books. They can make music. A generous donation from the area's Chan Memorial Fund made possible the purchase of a Yamaha Clavinova CVP69 digital piano. The fund was established by the parents of Chee-Jun Chan, an 18-year-old musician and honor student in the community who died in January 1996, after struggling with bone cancer.

The CVP69 is available for use in the library's computer room, free for residents and $1 for non-residents. For those who may not be aware of its availability, the CVP69 will be introduced to the community's 18,000 households through a library newsletter.

Lee Schacht, the library's director, said Chee-Jun's family began the memorial fund to foster music appreciation and benefit the community. "Chee-Jun was well-known in the community and his loss was felt throughout. It was a wonderful gesture and a good opportunity on the part of his parents to try bringing the community together," she added.

A music series has also been established from the memorial fund, offering concerts three times a year. Performers are either Chicago area musicians or musically-inclined students of the local Hinsdale High School using the CVP69 as well as other instruments. The Clavinova was featured most recently this past February, at a library donor party at which four students performed. The party was held to thank all of the people who contributed to the library's new location in Darien.
