Yamaha Supports Coltrane Vision

As the intoxicating sounds of the John Coltrane Festival Young Musician & Artist Competition (YMAC) filled Pierce College in Woodland Hills, CA, the Clavinova digital piano was on the scene. A CLP157 model was played by participants in the youth competition for jazz music. The annual event celebrated its 10th anniversary as part of the festival in November 1996.

"The John Coltrane Festival, in conjunction with the Yamaha Academic Relations Group, has used the Clavinova digital piano for the last several years," commented Michael Bates, director of academic relations for Yamaha. "Since Yamaha is the overwhelming choice of jazz musicians everywhere, it is only fitting that the Clavinova be requested for this high-quality jazz event."

Yamaha has been a sponsor of both the festival and YMAC since 1992, helping support the work of Alice Coltrane to keep alive the dream of her late husband, John.A genius of the tenor and soprano saxophones, John Coltrane was the most innovative creator of avant garde music. His vision of helping young musicians and artists is realized at each festival and YMAC event.

"The Clavinova perfectly completes the variety of instruments featured in the competition," said Marilyn McLeod, festival executive secretary and coordinator. "The purpose of YMAC is to showcase new talent, and encourage young musicians and artists to develop their highest potential. The Clavinova certainly aides in that goal."

Year after year, a sizable sum of money is awarded to competitors in two YMAC categories - youth and adult. Participants, skilled in keyboard, saxophone or voice, are judged on interpretation and musical ability, among other qualifications. The 11th annual event takes place at the Los Angeles Wiltern Theater in September 97, when Coltrane would have turned 71.
