State-of -the-Art Piano Key to Success of New Music Technology Center Duquesne University's School of Music is one of the newest homes for Yamaha's Clavinova CVP92 digital pianos. Last November, the Catholic university, located in Pittsburgh, PA, opened a newly renovated music technology center and piano lab that now houses 17 CVP92s, provided by Trombino Music in Pittsburgh, PA.
"A feature like the MIDI recorders allows our faculty to be more creative when instructing," says Purse, a former writer for the Joy Carden Keyboard Ensemble Series in Cincinnati and San Francisco. It was this experience with the Ensemble which allowed Purse to become more familiar with Yamaha and the benefits of the CVP92. Duquesne requires all music students to take a two-credit class called Computers for Musicians. This class assists students in developing computer skills for the 21st century by utilizing the technology of the Clavinova CVP92 digital pianos. "The students love the technology, and are impressed with the feel and touch of the digital piano. Students are using the labs more during the open lab hours. The technology of the CVP92 is certainly a draw." The new labs, which include Apple Power Macs loaded with networking software at each piano, also enables the professors to be more innovative in their teaching techniques. The Clavinova digital pianos also help Duquesne faculty assist teachers from the Pittsburgh public school system. According to Purse, over the summer Duquesne University professors will teach Pittsburgh school district music teachers the latest in music technology. "The environment of the renovated laboratories allows teachers and students
to have instant access to the tools, software and hardware necessary for
an optimum learning environment," explains William Purse, chair of the
music technology department.
