Playing Pianos in the Library Music director Karola Martin assists
Kelsey Students in South Burlington, VT, are encouraged to play in the library -- play music, that is. Thanks to an idea from Contois Music in Essex Junction, VT, Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School and South Burlington High School now have a Yamaha Clavinova CVP69 in each of their libraries. "I had been working with teenagers for a number of years, training them after school and on weekends to be piano teachers for young children," said Dave Contois of Contois Music. "We thought it would be a great idea to have the teenagers using their free time during the school day to practice rather than having to wait until school was out." With that mission Dave approached Karola Martin, music director for the two schools. "Its been great implementing our idea into the local school system. Karola deserves a special thank you for her help in making the idea a reality for the students," continued Dave. The Clavinovas are extremely popular at both schools, being in use constantly during students free time. In fact, during an average week approximately 100 to 125 people use the digital pianos. The high school library also serves as the community library so, in addition to the students, the Clavinova is also used by the people of South Burlington. By checking out a set of headphones from the librarian, those wishing to play the Clavinova can do so without disturbing those seeking a quiet environment for studying or reading. Even students wanting to practice their duets together can so do by taking advantage of the Clavinovas duel headphone capability. The Clavinovas are also "borrowed" from both libraries approximately a dozen times a year for use in band concerts and other student performances, including Fine Arts night. The performances are actually juggled to ensure that all who require the Clavinova will have one. "Dave Contois has given so much of his time to the kids and our
schools. He has a vision and rolls up his sleeves to get the job done -- exactly what our
children need if they are going to succeed in the 20th century!" exclaimed Karola.
