The Future of Piano Instruction Arrives in Indiana

Together with her husband and business associate Dale, Charlene started The Music School in September 1997 thanks to the overwhelming support of Yamaha representatives in her area and with the invaluable assistance of Bill Erlandson, vice president of marketing at Indianapolis-based Meridian Music. As a result, her dream of a high-tech, instructional piano studio for students is now a reality.

A home-based piano instructor for many years, Charlene was looking for a way to make piano instruction more accessible to her students, particularly to adults who may not have the time to devote to intensive piano study, but who still want to learn. She first discussed the idea of a high-tech music school with Yamaha consultant Joy Carden while attending Yamaha Keyboard Technology Seminars. It was then that she began to see the many advantages that the Clavinova digital piano could provide to her and her students in both group and private settings.

The Clavinovas at The Music School allow Charlene to arrange simple melodies for beginning students to practice, while allowing her group classes to become part of a "keyboard orchestra." All the elements of basic composition: melody, countermelody, bass and percussion are at the students fingertips when they step into her two classrooms. Portable keyboards attached to two computer workstations allow students to play along while learning about music theory from instructional software.

Charlene’s students can now select from a variety of instruments each time they come into class. Students can create sounds like a bass, a flute or drum, and still master the eighty-eight keys. "I had one student who was so excited, saying, "I always wanted to play French horn." Now she can," commented Charlene. "Seeing the light in a student's eyes when they hear themselves on the Clavinova, playing in this orchestral setting after only three or four lessons is one of the most amazing and wonderful things about this instrument."   green.GIF (51 bytes)
