Yamaha Unites Students at South Seattle Community College
The Clavinova digital piano lab at South Seattle Community College is receiving a grand reception from students as diverse as the city itself. The Clavinovas have been a real blessing, says Music Director Paula Herd. The students couldnt be happier. The college has been so pleased with the response from both students and faculty that the new lab made the cover of the 1998 Summer Class Schedule catalog. Herd, and piano teacher, Diane Schmidt, were instrumental in getting the college to purchase five CLP411s in October of 97. As soon as the Clavinovas started rolling in, students began racing to practice. The lab has even generated additional sales for Washburn Piano Company, formerly Evans Music, in the greater Seattle metropolitan area. Some have already come into the store asking for a Clavinova, says the stores manager Steve Carver. The school purchased ten more CLPs through Washburn Piano this year and intends to buy five more. Upon completion, they will have a 21-unit Clavinova piano lab, including an MLC-100 teaching console.
We have a wide variety of students who use these instruments, says Herd. People from all age groups are taking piano classes and love it. The students include beginners to advanced players, 18-year-olds, parents, and grandparents. Herd feels the class environment is much more effective than an individual program because of the interaction of students. As a teacher, I can see the unity that was not there before, says Herd.
They get support from one another. Theres camaraderie in terms of everyone
working towards a musical end. Now, theres nothing holding them back.
