Yamaha helps put Music Education in National Spotlight

Representing Yamaha Corporation of America’s three musical divisions – Piano, Pro Audio & Combo, and Band & Orchestral – Michael Bennett, vice president and general manager, Band and Orchestral Division, brought a Yamaha flute to Today Show hosts Matt Lauer and Anne Curry in June as a symbol of the company’s $150,000 contribution. In addition to the Clavinova digital pianos, the pledged items represent the entire spectrum of Yamaha musical products, including band instruments, portable keyboards, an array of guitars, and several Music In Education computer-linked keyboard labs for classrooms.

“Yamaha has been involved with VH1 Save the Music since its inception, and it’s a great program,” Bennett said on the air. “My hat’s off to VH1 President John Sykes for getting it started.”

The Yamaha Piano Division was also an active participant in determining the “Best 100 Communities for Music Education in America” through a first-ever nationwide survey of school music education programs conducted on the internet earlier this year. “Our objective was to highlight which communities have successful music programs and to show the rest of the country that music education can be successfully integrated into a student’s overall academic offerings,” says Lewis.

The survey was made possible by a partnership of the country’s top organizations devoted to music and learning. The American Music Conference (AMC) joined Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and the National School Boards Association (NSBA), in creating the survey and distributing it nationwide over the internet. During the data analysis phase, Yamaha and VH1 Save the Music provided additional expert assistance to the survey organizers.
