Annual MTNA Convention Highlights Digital Piano

Music teachers nationwide had an opportunity to explore the many features of the Yamaha Clavinova digital piano when they gathered at the annual Music Teachers National Association convention in Minneapolis, MN. During the event last March, Yamaha Clavinova Festival National Coordinator Lori Frazer led an entertaining and educational seminar, “Performance Options for Students Using Digital Pianos,” using six Clavinova CVP107 models provided courtesy of Schmitt Music. The seminar highlighted the Clavinova’s vast capabilities, including ensemble performances, use of recorded sound effects, techniques for original composition, and sequencing.

“My goal was to showcase a wide variety of the Clavinova’s features,” says Frazer. “The seminar was divided into ten separate performances, each designed to highlight a particular feature. The main message that music teachers took away from this event is that playing the Clavinova is fun — no matter what your age or level of playing is. It is the ‘fun factor’ that motivates kids to play, and in the end, getting kids excited about making music is what’s most important.”

To assist in her presentation, Frazer turned to music educator and composer Susan Ogilvy as well as several previous Clavinova Festival participants. Ogilvy arranged an ensemble that was performed by her younger students – all participants of the Brook Mays Clavinova Festival in Dallas, TX held last February.

“An important aspect of the Clavinova that we wanted to emphasize is that pianos now have a chance to play in ensemble settings,” says Ogilvy. “Clavinova digital pianos bring performers to a higher level of musicianship because the instruments have many voices to choose from and provide superior sound quality.”

Ogilvy also agrees with Frazer that the Clavinova motivates students to play more often – an idea that hit home with the music teachers as well.

“After the seminar, many music teachers wanted to learn more about the Clavinova, even those who were originally skeptical about teaching on a digital piano,” says Ogilvy. “The Clavinova just captivated them because they see it as a brand new performance medium. They wanted to know how they can include the Clavinova in their own music studios.”
