30TH NEWPORT MUSIC FESTIVAL
Artists who made their Newport debuts included legendary American pianist Abbey Simon, Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski, American clarinetist Jon Manasse, and Cantus, a male chamber choir from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. A number of prominent musicians made their American debuts at Newport this past summer, including pianist Ulugbek Palvanov of Uzbekistan, the recent winner of the First International Tbilisi Piano Competition, Albanian violinist Tedi Papavrami, Russian violinist Sasha Sitkovetsky, Lithuanian mezzo Judita Leitaite, and English pianist Piers Lane. In reviewing Lane's performance, The Providence Journal Bulletin was inspired to write, "An unknown pianist from London who put on a dazzling show at The Breakers. He's got the magic touch." The Newport Music Festival also welcomed back a number of prominent artists, including Americans Frederic Chiu, Theresa Cincione, Beverly Hoch, Thomas Hrynkiw (who last year recorded the "Russian Romantics" solo disk for Yamaha's PianoSoft "Classical Collection"), Richard Knisely, Marilyn Mair, Anne-Marie McDermott, Kerry McDermott and Maureen McDermott, Jane Murray, Eliot Porter, Eric Ruske, Livia Sohn, Melanie Sonnenberg, Susan Thomas,
