Throughout the tour, Berkey, playing a Yamaha Disklavier® DGT2IIXG, and Moore, playing the harp, performed "Piano Derivations" as well as selections from Berkey's CD's "Nature of the World" and "Four Lullabies for Harp." The tour included performances in Des Moines, IA; Kansas City, MO; and Omaha and Lincoln, NE.
"Diabelli" Variations was recorded in Susan Halligan's home studio in Johnson, VT. She has been playing the Yamaha C7 since 1978, when she purchased it from Frederick Johnson Pianos. "The sound engineer was delighted to find that we were using the C7 for the piece because it was ideal for recording," says Halligan. "The sound of the piano was one of the most important things because it is so clear, so clean, and immediate." World renowned historic tuning expert Owen Jorgensen sanctioned the tuning of the piano for "Diabelli" Variations. A tuning method known as Kirnberger III was selected because of its close resemblance to the temperaments practiced during the lifetimes of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. "The tuning of the piano for this piece is what makes the recording so unique," explains List. "Very few recordings of "Diabelli" Variations exist. This is the first time the piece has been recorded on the piano in a historic temperament." To date, the recording of "Diabelli" Variations has spurred interest among many piano technicians and enthusiasts because of the historical tuning method used.
