Newport Music Festival
Celebrates 1998 as its 30th Season

he 1998 Newport Music Festival will celebrate its 30th season July 10-26, continuing its tradition of presenting unique chamber music programs, American debuts, world class artists and special events in the grand "summer cottages" of Newport, RI. Beginning his 24th season, General Director Dr. Mark P. Malkovich, III, researches and selects works from the 19th century chamber music, vocal repertoire and Romantic era piano literature to create one of the most extraordinary festivals in the world.

The Festival will present a record 61 concerts in Newport's famed mansions this summer, with over 60 artists from around the world participating. Yamaha continues its support as one of the major Festival sponsors, providing a range of CFIIIS concert grand pianos, Disklavier® pianos and rehearsal instruments during the 17-day event.

Highlights of the upcoming season include the continuation of "Beethoveniads," the two-year series of retrospective concerts started in 1997. Sixteen afternoon programs will be devoted to the complete chamber music, piano works and songs, both well-known and rare, of the German composer. Artists making their Newport debuts include legendary American pianist Abbey Simon, who celebrates his 75th birthday in 1998, Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski, American clarinetist Jon Manasse, and Cantus, a male chamber choir from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Among the artists making their American debuts at Newport this summer are Albanian violinist Tedi Papavrami, Russian violinist Sasha Sitkovetsky, pianist Ulugbek Palvanov and English pianist Piers Lane.

Two favorite Newport traditions that continue in 1998 are the popular concert cruises on Naragansett Bay with champagne brunch and the midnight concerts at Marble House, featuring a number of artists performing works by Haydn, Schubert, Richard Strauss and Frederic Rzewski.

The Newport Music Festival also welcomes the return of Italian piano legend Sergio Fiorentino, American artists Frederic Chiu, Theresa Cincione, Beverly Hoch, Thomas Hrynkiw, Richard Knisely, Marilyn Mair, Anne-Marie McDermott, Kerry McDermott and Maureen McDermott, French pianist Alain Jacquon, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Czech cellist Jirí Bárta, English pianist Hamish Milne and many, many more world class artists.
